Basket Barn

Kathleen McCormick

Basketmaker

I trained as a nurse in NYC in 1963, moved to Ireland in 1965, and have been here ever since. In 1999, after my husband passed away, I went on a basketry course with our premier teacher, Joe Hogan, and the rest is history. I was still farming full time after the death of my husband, I confused the baskets and farming until I was 55 when I availed of a government scheme of early retirement allowing me to weave baskets full time. I learned to grow my own willow, harvest and dry it and use it in basket making. I am a member of the Irish Basketmakers Association and have been at many exhibitions including Bord Bia Bloom, Showcase and the RDS Craft Fair having won prizes for my work there. I take it easy now at 82 years old.
